Half-Asleep Blog

Ok, Ali...I'm doing this for you. Sure, I've had a bout of insomnia and have only slept 5 hours total over the past two nights, but here I am, doing everything in my power to remain upright and update my blog. :)

I did, in fact, try Macy on some rice cereal shortly after I last blogged. This is precisely why they don't recommend spoon-feeding prior to 4 months of age:

I always put the leftovers in her bottle, but I find that it has no bearing on how long she sleeps at night.

Her two teeth, however, do. Her two bottom teeth just broke through over the course of the last week. I can't believe it's already time for her to have teeth. Four months passed pretty quickly with Liam, but I just can't believe she's almost there herself.

She's a very similar baby to Liam in that she started out being pretty fussy whenever she was awake, but by now she's pretty content most of the time. As long as you're talking to her, she's happy.

She also learned a new trick last Tuesday.

Now, every time we put her on her back, she's pretty quick to roll over onto her stomach. She'll be fine there for awhile, but then she gets a little upset. You roll her to her back, and she immediately goes back to her tummy. I guess they don't quite understand cause and effect yet!

Meanwhile, Liam is just such a fun little guy (well - MOST of the time!). It's so fun to carry on a conversation with him and see what's going to come out of that little mouth of his next. It's crazy to know that he can make connections and reach logical conclusions now. I'm sure that's been a work in progress long before he could talk, but now he can put words to it.

The other night, he was sitting on his potty trying to pee while I went to wash my face. He started off with his favorite question:

L: What are you doing?
Me: Taking off my makeup.
L: You don't like your makeup anymore?

Then, while I was putting on my Bio-Oil:

L: What are you doing?
Me: Putting this oil on my belly because your sister gave me stretch marks. Do you remember when she was in my belly? It was really big!
L: Baby said "wahh, I want to get out of your belly!"

It's hard to describe why these exchanges are so novel and entertaining. It's like such a sudden glimpse into the inner workings of your child's brain that hits you like a ton of bricks one day. How many times have you seen someone gaze at a baby and say "I just wonder what goes on in that mind of his or hers?" Well, now you can stop wondering, and you realize that there has been so much more going on than you ever thought. He's not simply repeating things he has heard, but instead he's forming his own thoughts from scratch.

I can't wait to see how he evolves socially. On one hand, he's a very funny kid. He seems to have an innate understanding of how and when to use inflections and facial expressions in his commentary. He has a very good smart-ass tone that he'll use in certain situations, and he just kind of reminds me of the funny kid in the class where comedy just comes naturally, much like it never did for me. On the other hand, he's also that shy kid who carries around a stuffed animal at school. It takes us a long time to get him to come out of his shell and sing a song for his grandparents, even though he's completely comfortable in front of them. He's just very reserved in social situations, and I hope that he's able to break through and be confident enough to show his true self in front of his peers.

I was watching him on the video camera the other day at school, and he looked like he was laughing with a couple classmates. I could see the smart-ass expression on his face, so I was hopeful. His teachers all say he's interactive. Probably not to the extent that he is with us, but at least he's breaking through. I think being around this group of kids that he's essentially grown up with is working wonders for my shy boy.

So many things to worry about, but so much fun to be had.
