Best Laid Plans Part II

Today became the day. I was lounging in the glider while Liam played around in his crib and talked to me before getting up. Rather than throwing his leg over the side and trying to get out that way, he just flipped his whole upper body upside down over the rail and lifted his feet up a couple inches. He stopped in the middle of the maneuver, but I told Andy that it was treacherous enough that, with a little extra momentum, he could have definitely flown out head-first. I'm not sure how much attempting to escape he does when we're not around, but you just hate to chance it.

So we ventured out this A.M. to dismantle the crib, re-do it with the conversion rails, take the mattress from the other room and call it a day.

Well, best laid plans, right? We got it together, and the head board and foot board (both components of his crib) didn't stay on. They're basically held on with 4 wooden dowels each, and all you have to do is apply some gentle pressure to get them to fall off. We tried without the head board and foot board, but there was no support going across. We tried with just the head board, as that is smack up against the wall with no chance of falling over (but it does disconnect so that it no longer lends any support).

I don't really know where we thought we were going from there, but I was in the middle of putting his little bed rails together when Andy said "I just had a crazy idea." Uh oh. He said, "why don't we just put the crib back together and use it for [insert baby's name] rather than getting the crib from [his brother and SIL]?" I was like, hmm...not a terrible idea, actually. Yes, the nursery will be a nice mixture of half cherry and half oak, but eh...he makes a great point.

So we ended up disassembling the conversion kit (a great waste of the too-much we spent on it), boxing it back up, and putting Liam's box spring and mattress on the floor until we can get him a cheap metal bed frame.

The nursery is almost complete. We just have to put the crib back together, which we are about to do once Andy can track down some instructions for it. It's just funny how I thought we could keep Liam in a crib until he's closer to 3 and wait to set up the baby's nursery. Now here we are, having run through a completely different plan with completely different furniture than originally anticipated. I think ultimately, though, I am happy with how it's ended up.

Right now, he's sleeping sweetly in his new big-boy bed. I wouldn't say it's been an easy first day. I did put him down for a nap, and he fought me, trying to get out of bed as long as I was in there. Once I walked out of the room, though, he did cry for a bit but surprisingly didn't get out of bed. He only slept an hour, but I guess I couldn't expect much. Bedtime was the same thing - he tried to get out until I left the room, and then he went to sleep pretty quietly. Now it's just a question of whether or not we get any middle-of-the-night visits.

The chaos of today (because, by the way, this day-long chore was taxing on Liam, which made it twice as taxing on us), along with wanting to make sure that all has gone alright through the night and into the morning, has provided a perfect excuse to skip the Y in the morning. It's also made it VERY tempting to take a PTO day tomorrow....
